Porn is such a powerful force in both our culture and in our minds due to the heightened dopamine levels that occur when either viewing it alone or using it along with masturbation. The porn induces a chemical like effect on the brain that renders it under about two hundred units of dopamine at a time per porn session. This is what gives the brain the pleasure that it then associates with the images viewed on the computer screen. The consequences of the brain drawing associations to images through the brain being splashed with dope causes a loop in the brain of the individual who is watching the pornographic material. The novelty and accessibility of being able to see as many naked females as possible has a neuroplastic effect on the user that eventually dulls his or her ability to derive dopamine from everyday activities. This can then effect ones relationships in a drastic way due to the brain becoming numb to just any ordinary form of intamicy such as their friends and family. This also makes the user more distant emotionally from their relatives due to the preoccupation with the memorization of the images they were previously viewing in the last session. Like any truly illicit drug the porn will eventually steal the user life from other things that he or she took joy in doing previously. It is scientifically shown that people who engage in compulsory sexual acts like pornography have a higher count in brain reactivity than those who claim to not have such compulsory behavior. The patterns that constitute drug addiction also show themselves congruent with porn addiction as well. A specific individual may have an exposure to a woman in lingerie and before they know it they begin to experiment and thus create new pathways to the brain that says that this activity is “worth” repeating. The next step in this downward spiral is an attempt to view even more graphic material to get the same dopamine rush as before much like a drug addict will want a higher dose of the drug to get the same chemicals of euphoria in their bloodstream. Even when the person wants to quit the pornography they are now officially addicted when they do the porn anyways. All the while they may be denying that they even have a problem which only reinforces the addiction because they seek out justifications for the personality that can not stop using this substance. Yes they excessively use porn and a part of their brain grows into a separate personality that craves to seek out nude photographs of woman in various positions according to the pathways the brain has created previously. This may even form twisted preferences in the brain regarding sex that are called paraphilia and in return reinforce the addiction to the same porn that gave them that perverse preference in the first place. The development of paraphilias also may cause harm to oneself and others and some are illegal to do in public or at all like exhibitionism and pedophillia. Ted Bundy the serial killer in an interview before his death even claimed that his youth was characterized by viewing hardcore pornography which he attributes to his obsession with raping and murdering woman. For Ted Bundy the crimes came after the addiction to pornography. His case is an extreme example of what pornography is capable of and it does not merit conclusions which say that everyone addicted to porn will end up like him, but it does show plainly the severity it could have on an individual much like a drug. Just like meth addiction for example pornography addiction could destroy lives and render the individual hollowed out and left existentially alone in a puddle of their own shame. The more popular porn became the more relevant the internet became. Although it sounds pessimistic it is the truth because as long as we are hardwired to breed and copulate with one another the porn industry will always have a varied grip on the many minds viewing the material that they produce via the internet.
